1988 Fleer stickers

I read Night Owl post and it reminded me that I also have some Fleer stickers too. So I went and right at the first box I open I found some of them.

So I posting my 1988 Fleer stickers.

I always tried to understand the algorithm for Fleer to match the teams in the cards but I couldn't figure it out. Maybe you can help me.

And a note to Detroit logo card, because that tiger is on steroids or has a serious sinusitis problem...

(And I have too because I've scanned two equal cards)

These stickers cards also play as card on their right, even if you actually peel the stickers. Because on the other side you have the stadiums.

How many of these are still standing!?

Oakland - yep
KC - yep
Blue Jays - yep
Mariners - demolished (year 2000)
Detroit - demolished (year 2009)
Astros - closed (year 2008), partially demolished (year 2013)
Cardinals - demolished (year 2005)
Yankees - demolished (year 2009/2010)
Brewers - demolished (year 2001)
Pirates - demolished (year 2001)
San Diego - yep (Padres moved to Petco Park)

Well...the majority was demolished. But other stadiums were constructed on the demolished ones site. So they kind are still there, like living a second life.

Catch me if you can

I like Catchers cards.

It's a unique position on the field. Not only you get to call the plays but you also get to maybe collide with someone running right at you for the Home Plate.

It's pure beautiful!

I've stated before that I like cards where the Catchers have their masks on. But I also like cards where they are getting out of the HP ready to catch a Fly Ball, or ready to through at 2B for an out, or to catch a bunt ball...You name it.

That's why I like these two.

What's in a name - Feliz

Some years ago in A&G set, I think, Topps had those insert cards for 'What's in a Name' or something like that.

Sooooooo lets try doing something like that.

I start with mister Feliz.

Why?

Because Feliz is 'happy' in Portuguese (and in Spanish too).

This is one of the examples where there is not much to say.
But I just have two points to make:
Torey looks like Andy Pettitte. And Robert is better known as Rey Palacios which made me go round a few times before knowing it was the same guy.

Going back

Sometimes I just go to my pictures archive, when I cannot get to my cards, and re-discover some new things I didn't notice at first.

And it seems Fleer sets are great to do so.

You have all kinds of stuff.

You have situations not so common like a pitcher catching.

Or you simply have cards that you don't even think what comment they deserve because there are not words invented yet to characterize them.

Or you even have those showing off some hair and beard styles from last century that even back then they were simply ugly.

Other seem to hold the world on their shoulders.

But one thing is for sure...What a great set!s

Well, this one is easy!

Catchers

Two examples of how a catcher's card can be great.

We have Mike Scioscia arguing with the umpire. And there is someone else there too.

Here Damon Berryhill is ready to tag the player rushing to the home plate.

Would it be an horizontal card and the sliding player would be fitting and the card would be even better.

Crowded dust

This card not only has dust in the air but is one of those crowded cards with lot of things happening.

Got to love it!

Sunday, 3 August 2014

What did I just hit?

Ken Griffey Jr. doesn't seem that happy with his hit.

Dave Parker is still looking for the ball.

Tony Gwynn and the umpire simply didn't got anything that just happen.

Dust post - Karate move

I don't think Galarraga was playing baseball here.

It seems more like making some karate move.

But I don't mind because in the end there is DUST EVERYWHERE!

Both have long careers but one was a starter and the other was a relief pitcher.
Ken Hill has an All Star call but none the same Dennis Cook wins because of the WS title.

To consider them as true prospects makes me think a bit.
I just have some doubts because they have so many teams. I always think that if you are good the team you are in tries everything to keep you. If you are traded a lot I always think there is some problem...

A PED's card makes you seeing double

It's 40/40 in each eye.

No need for glasses.

This is what happens when I get ill

I've been ill for around 3 months and I've been recovering slowly  and so I need some encouragement.

So I decided to encourage myself.

I order the above box.

Filled with 36 packs of Upper Deck Collector's Choice Special Edition.

Much much fun with great photos.

And since I saw these offer of 12 wax packs, all together counting around 540 cards, I decided to get them too.

That's even more fun!

So I'm having a Collector's Choice and a wax party.

I'm missing something...

I haven't bought a single pack or box or card for such a long time...

I'm in deprivation state!

The good thing about it is that I have spent more time paying attention to the cards I have.

And I find all time of cards.

Look at this 1988 Fleer Dick Schofield.

And Schofield is just one letter away of:

Yeh!

After this great moment let get to where I intended to go at first...

I like the diagonal design some cards have. Specially because in the pitchers cards sometimes the mound is showing with the same inclination as the bottom design line and it looks great.

But!

The top.

Fleer here had to make some tough decisions.

The top diagonal line will cut the photo:

#1 - Reduce the photo to have it all in side the design.
#2 - Cut off the head! Who needs a head anyway!?
#3 - Lets pretend that Schofield plays with a junior bat.

We all can see the result.

PS: I think that in my subconscious I want to do the post only because I wanted to post a tatooed Scofield photo in the blog eheh
