Topps 2016 - cards I like because yes - part I

I started using glasses around my twenties and since then I started paying attention to people using them. Because it is still a thing that is viewed (nice pun!) as not making a person pretty. Using glasses is quite normal and almost everyone do need them but if you go take a photo you usually take them off.

In sports it's even less common to see a player using glasses. In football the most famous was Dutch Edgar Davids. He had to ask FIFA to be able to use them during the matches. That's a bit sad, to have to ask the organisation that controls the sports if you can use something so vital for you.

Well...in baseball it is more common than in football but it's always a rare pull when you get a card with a player wearing glasses.

That's why I liked this Marksberry RC so much. And why I might have written my longest paragraphs in a post LOL

You know how much I love dust in the air. Sadly it's more dirt in the air nowadays. The good old dust cloud is something from the past. But ohhhh well...this will do.

Ortiz is one of those few players, that even playing for rival teams you respect them a lot.

Ichiro here is a plus, because he actually played for my team.

Both Ortiz and Ichiro got pretty good cards this past year.

Pitchers thanking the baseball gods are always something cool. I can only picture the little baseball devils trying to interfere with ball when it's on its way to make it a ball instead of a strike.

The Devil's Whisper.

I admire a lot all the Catchers. They have to be in that awful painful position for so long, and then have to kick off it and run like Chirinos is doing here in the card, to get the ball or help the field players get the out. They sure are complete players.

  1. I too wear glasses and, I must admit, I am guilty of often taking them off for photographs. I tell myself it's because on lens glare, but perhaps it is my subconscious insecurity speaking. Anyway, very nice cards (which I can actually see, thanks to my glasses)!

    1. eheheh I do the same ;) I only use mine while working or when I really need to see something far away. I say that while I can distinguish the right bus to take, I don't need to wear glasses all the time B)

  2. Ryne Duren wore glasses for the the Yankees and Angels among other teams in the 50s and early 60s. He had TERRIBLE eyesight and was famous for not seeing hitters. Wild Thing from Major League is sort of based on Duren I think.

And I wear glasses and don't take them off for pictures. Nothing could make me pretty so it doesn't matter. My eye doctor told me that I'd need glasses about the age of forty. He was right, almost to the day!

Oh, I almost forgot. Check out this card!

    1. Almost to the day!? Bloody hell! Ask him the lottery numbers please!

Nice story! I didn't know! I can only imagine the hitter, the catcher and the umpire at the home plate, sweating and shaking while Duren prepared to pitch, all afraid he would let the glasses fall over and hit one of them! ehehe

I have a couple of Chris Sabo's cards, and he was my glasses-player until now. Because that Palmer card is my new I WANT I NEED card. Bloody hell! That is one extraordinaire card to have!

And because of this post I found this wiki page with a list of *bespectacled baseball players*

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_bespectacled_baseball_players

      Because this is a thing!

  3. As a fellow spectacle wearer... I never really though about collecting athletes wearing glasses. But I did really like Eric Sogard when he was with he A's and I think deep down... I like him b/c of the glasses.

    1. Fellow spectacle wearer (I truly liked that!) I agree with you, because we tend to like people, in sports or in music business, that we can relate with.
And btw..Eric looks that cute geek friend we all like to have..well..at least I find him cute ;)

  4. I've worn glasses since I was a kid, and I'll make a bold statement: I *like* when women wear glasses, and I don't say that just because the lovely Mrs. Shlabotnik wears them as well. I guess I'm just drawn to the "nerd chic" aspect of it. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

    1. That's bold indeed! lol Send my hello to Mrs. Shlabotnik!
When we're kids, if there is one or more with some difference, like wearing glasses. I bet nobody would pick the '4-eyes' to play in their team..ohhhh well. It's nice to have people that look like *normal* people in sports, music, acting, and others, that kids nowadays look up to.

  5. I wear glasses but in my state the Dept of motor vehicles makes us take them off for our driver's license photos. It makes us glasses wearers look weird. When I noted to my eye doctor that I was having trouble reading, he said "Welcome to 40!" Seems to me the 1970's had a lot of players wearing glasses, mostly aviators.
